FAQ
Is this therapy?
No. Shame: The Game is a self-reflection tool. It isn't counseling or mental health care, and it doesn't diagnose or treat anything. You can use it alongside therapy, and therapists and coaches can use it in sessions.
Who is it for?
Adults who want a different way into a hard subject: on their own, with a partner or friend, in a group, or with a professional. You don't need to know anything about shame to start.
What if a card brings up more than I expected
That can happen. Stop, set the card aside, and take care of yourself. Talk to someone you trust. If you're struggling, call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org, anytime. In immediate danger, call 911.
Do I have to share anything
Never. You can play entirely in your own journal. In groups, anyone can pass on any card.
Can therapists and coaches use it with clients?
Yes. The deck works as a conversation prompt in a session. How it's used, and any care decisions, rest with the professional.
Is there an app? Yes, in beta. The Shame: The Game companion web app is in early testing. You choose your cards and receive a short reflection written with AI. Like the deck, it's for reflection, not therapy, and it doesn't save your readings. Try it out at shamethegame.app
Note for Paul: The therapist answer is the one counsel should look at most closely. Keep it short and keep responsibility with the professional.
